The United Arab Emirates (the UAE) is a flourishing region in the Gulf Area divided into seven emirates. Abu Dhabi is the largest of all seven emirates, approximately 87 % of the country’s total area. Dubai, most famous for it's ambitious and grand real estate expansion in the last decade, is known as the second emirate of the group, Sharjah being the third region of the Emirates. The other Emirates are called Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah.
The UAE has continuously been a major contributor of financial and other aid in the developing world. The key player in this is the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD). Since it was created in 1971, the ADFD has provided, mainly in Africa, over Dh24 billion (US$6.54 billion), covering 258 different projects in a total of 52 countries.
